Americans take 30 Billion doses of OTC pain meds a year. Taking NSAIDS has been shown to more than double the risk of total knee replacement. The overall impact of NSAIDS on our nation’s health has been well documented, yet few of us appreciate the magnitude of these health risks.
NSAIDS have many joint-specific side effects. Common over the counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen and Alleve accellerate cartilage loss. The lecture was designed to help inform the public about the risks of these medications, their effects on joint health and osteoarthritis, and their contribution to total joint replacement risk, and provided alternative treatment options.
